Individual trekking tour to the Barva volcano
The extinct Barva volcano is an absolute insider tip in the central valley
Braulio Carrillo National Park, Costa Rica
The volcano is located about 25 km north of San José and offers a unique, bizarre landscape. The Braulio Carrillo National Park and the extinct Barva volcano are apparently a big unknown on the to-do lists of Costa Rica travelers. Beautiful, lonely hiking trails entice you through intact cloud forest - an easy physical challenge that is definitely worth it.
The Barva volcano has long been extinct. It is part of the Braulio Carrillo National Park, the largest and most important national park in the Central Valley. The last few kilometers of the journey may be a little more demanding for the driver - depending on the weather, four-wheel drive may even have to be switched on. Access is not possible with a normal car.
Since the Barva volcano is a relatively unknown and little-visited destination, the tour takes place exclusively as individual transport, i.e. without a group and also without a guide. You will be picked up from your hotel in the morning and the journey will take just over 90 minutes in a comfortable vehicle. From the entrance to the national park, an interesting but quite strenuous footpath leads through the cloud forests. You feel like you're with JRR Tolkien and don't want to put the camera down.
Fog is normal here and contributes to the eerie atmosphere in the cloud forest. At 2906 m, the volcano itself is the highest elevation in the national park, on the east side of which the crater lake, the "Laguna de Barva", can be seen. On the west side you can see three hills on the mountain, they are called "las tres Marias".
The Barva Volcano is an excellent place to experience the impressive natural diversity of Costa Rica. There are many exciting ways.
The view of the crater lake of the 2906 m high volcano is possible from two viewpoints. Another path leads to a side crater - Laguna Copey , from where you can also experience a spectacular view of the central valley. An exciting morning in the tropical cloud forest, lonely and quiet with impressive flora and fauna. The trekking takes a good 3-4 hours, the driver waits without any problems - so you don't have to rush. After the tour, you will have a delicious lunch in a typical mountain restaurant.
The activity takes place daily by reservation, for groups of 2 or more.
