Rio San Carlos to the border
Nicaragua begins at the Rio San Juan
The Rio San Carlos is a powerful river that originates from the Arenal Volcano.
In the lower reaches of the Rio San Carlos, just before joining the Rio San Juan , the border river between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, it joins the RioTres Amigos.
Up to the town of Boca Tapada, there is busy agriculture in this region. Shortly after Boca Tapada, large, protected primary forest areas begin. The starting point for getting to know the rainforest is the Laguna del Lagarto Lodge . and the Maquenque Eco Lodge . Each of the two lodges protects 500 hectares of tropical rainforest, and more than 400 species of birds roam here.
The boat trip on the Rio San Carlos is also a special experience - lots of alligators, river turtles and Iguanas can be seen and although the human influence on the shore is visible, there is still the opportunity to see monkeys and a variety of birds.
