Day tour to Poás Volcano

Day tour to the Poas volcano in the highlands of Costa Rica in connection with the Doka coffee hacienda and the la Paz waterfalls
Tour in Costa Rica

Poás Volcano from San José or Santa Ana

We highly recommend visiting the Poás volcano

This can take place in combination with the Doka coffee hacienda and the la Paz waterfalls

CURRENT: from 2017 to August 18 the volcano was closed to visits. It is now open for tours again, although for safety reasons you only get 20 minutes for the visit. Laguna Botos is still closed.

The active Poás volcano in the national park of the same name is one of Costa Rica's main attractions. The national park is about 1 hour north of Santa Ana/San José and can currently only be visited as a tour. We would be happy to help with planning.

The volcano's last major eruption was in April 2017. The 300 meter deep crater, which has a gigantic diameter of 1.3 kilometers, was expanded. There are also 2 secondary craters, one of which has a blue lagoon. There were further harmless eruptions in 1989, 1995 and 2006; 1953 was the largest eruption of all time. Anyone who wants to visit the volcano today must expect strict security measures and must accept the associated restrictions. You are only allowed to go to the crater in a group with a guide; the time at the volcano itself is limited to 20 minutes. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are not available for sale on site.

The attraction, the 2,704 meter high Poás volcano, allows a spectacular view of its bubbling interior when the weather is good.

You start quite early to the coffee hacienda Doka on the slope of the Poás volcano. A very interesting one Vulkan Poas, Zentraltal Costa Rica Tour with delicious food gives a great impression of organic coffee cultivation. You see and get to know and understand the coffee from the seedling through the bean to the finished drink.

Then we go up to the volcano in the hope of being able to take a look into the crater. Of course there is never a guarantee for this, but despite the fog you often have the chance to take a look at the sulphur-colored water in the huge crater with the fumaroles.

There is no arduous climb, as a well-developed footpath leads from the visitor center to the crater. Things get exciting when the Poás volcano spews sulphurous mud and steaming water into the air.

From the main crater, a one-hour path then leads through the adjacent stunted forest. This bizarre forest is created by the acidic air and cold. You reach the side crater with the Laguna Botos and, with a bit of luck, you have a good view inside. You have to keep your eyes open on this route, as many rare birds can be observed at this altitude. (This path is currently still closed to visitors in September 2019)

This day tour is combined with a visit to the famous waterfalls of La Paz, surrounded by fascinating fauna and flora. There you can visit a butterfly farm, a Ranario (frog zoo), an Avario (bird house) with many species of hummingbirds and wild enclosures where you can see various species of wild cats and monkeys, among other things. The excellent lunch buffet is also served here.

This guided day tour departs daily from Posada Nena or any hotel in the greater San José area (minimum 1 person).

Start: approx. 6:00 a.m
Return: around 5:30 p.m
Cost: on request, in the combination you pay a little less than if you add the entrance fees to the 3 attractions (coffee hacienda, volcano and La Paz waterfalls).
Tour without la Paz waterfalls: if you want to be back in San José/Santa Ana earlier and don't want to visit the la Paz waterfalls, you can end the tour at midday after the Poás volcano.
Incl: transfer and pick-up at the posada, very good bilingual guide, all entrance costs, breakfast and lunch, national park fees, non-alcoholic drinks with meals
