The Irazú volcano near Cartago
The highest volcano in Central America overlooking 2 oceans
Irazú Volcano, Cartago Cathedral and Oros Valley, all in one day.
The route goes higher and higher up the mountain along serpentines, past agricultural areas and climbs with the vehicle up to a height of 3,432 m to the crater of the “Irazú” volcano, the highest volcano in Costa Rica . When the sky is clear, there is a fantastic view over the main craters and the two oceans that border Costa Rica: the Atlantic and the Pacific .
You have to dress warmly for this tour because, despite the sunshine, there is often an ice-cold wind at these altitudes.
This is followed by a visit to the former capital of Costa Rica, Cartago, which lies at the foot of the volcano.
The “ Basílica de la Virgen de los Angeles ” is the most famous church in the region, where every year at the beginning of August tens of thousands of believers from all over the country make a pilgrimage to thank and pray to the Virgin Mary for her miracles.
Another highlight is the Lankester Orchid Garden , which enchants guests with its colorful splendor with over 830 species of orchids and many other plants. Costa Rica covers only 0.5% of the Earth's surface and is home to a full 5% of the world's biodiversity. These include 1,600 species of orchids. And one in eight of these species have been discovered, described and classified by scientists at Jardín Lankester.
