The Poás volcano is an absolute highlight and, after the recent eruption, a clear sign of how natural forces work.

The 2708 m high volcanic cone is just an hour's drive from Santa Ana. It is located in the national park of the same name, which covers an area of 5,600 hectares. The volcano is considered to be heavily active . It has erupted 40 times since 1928. The last major eruption took place in April 2017.

The volcano has two large craters, the main crater measures 1500 m in diameter and is 300 m deep, at its bottom you can observe a steaming lagoon. The second crater, the North Crater, is much smaller and filled with a sky-blue lagoon - the Laguna Botos. On the circular route to Laguna Botos (currently still closed) you are often lucky enough to observe rare species of birds - hummingbirds are very common, but the very rare quetzal has also been spotted.

To enter the national park you have to pay an entrance fee of US$ 15 (as a foreigner), you have to buy the ticket online in advance - there are strict security measures and you are only allowed to spend a short time at the crater due to the toxic fumes. At the entrance there is a small café, a souvenir shop and a museum that tells about the Poás volcano and volcanoes in general.

If you have a rental car, you can easily visit the volcano and the surrounding area on your own, although it is not easy to get tickets, which are limited and must be purchased electronically in advance.
