The wild Caribbean coast

Animals and nature reserves

The Caribbean coast stretches from the north of Nicaragua to the south of the Panama border.
The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is significantly different from the west coast. The landscape is characterized by mangrove forests and lowlands , coastal forests and many beaches. The tide is much lower than in the Pacific, so the beaches are often attractive and clean. Over half of the coastline is protected by national parks, including the very interesting Tortugueros National Park . The entire coastal region belongs to the province of Limón, with the capital of the same name. This not very attractive city is particularly important because of the huge container port of Moín, from which cargo is sent all over the world - three quarters of Costa Rica's international freight traffic goes through Moín . The rainy season in the Caribbean is usually from mid-April to mid-December - much longer than in the rest of the country. You will be rewarded by lush, green forests.

You see in this region a lot of immigrants from Caribbean countries (mostly Jamaica ), some of whom can't even speak Spanish, so you can hear a mix of Spanish/English on the streets, a language called Papiamento. Some of the original tribes are still settled here, including the BriBri and the Cabecar , who also live in the central valley.

It is said that it rains a lot on the Caribbean coast - but this is not generally true. The months of February, March, September and October are particularly dry and beautiful.
In the very south there is a border crossing to Panama at Sixaola , where you reach the province of Bocas del Toro and the island paradise of the same name. We are happy to help with the transfer to Panama.
We have a complete offer on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. We offer hotels, posadas, lodges and guesthouses. We also offer tours, including the spectacular tour to Tortuguero National Park and wildlife safaris in the Talamanca Mountains. The La Amistad International National Park should be emphasized here, as well as the rainforests on the coast. A particularly attractive destination there is the Selva Bananito Lodge.
