the regions of Costa Rica
Costa Rica can be roughly divided into six regions
They should not be confused with the political provinces (there are 7 of them).
The central valley around the capital San José is the economic, social and cultural center of the country. From here you can take a lot of exciting excursions and experience modern Costa Rica. It's worth setting up your base station here. The central valley is always on the route - from east to west, from north to south - you can hardly avoid it.
The northern mountain region extends to the border with Nicaragua and has a lot to offer in terms of tourism, such as the famous, heavily active Arenal volcano and the adjacent Lake Arenal reservoir, which is known worldwide among windsurfers. The rainforests around Monteverde also attract many visitors every year.
Further west is the northern Pacific region with the sunny and fairly flat landscape of Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula, the most popular holiday region in the Ticos. The North Pacific region extends from the border of Nicaragua to the Central Pacific.
The central Pacific coast is also the local recreation area for all the people who live and work in the Central Valley. This is why you see a particularly large number of people on the beaches during holiday periods and on weekends. Kilometers of sandy beaches and good infrastructure not only invite surfers.
To the south is the southern Pacific , which extends to the border with Panama. A very special and exciting destination here is the Osa Peninsula.
Far off the mainland you can also find the legendary Cocos Island. .... more
And last but not least, in the east of the country, the Caribbean coast , which stretches along the Caribbean from north to south. Here you will find beautiful sandy beaches, jungles and national parks that are really worth a visit. Worth mentioning are the international national park la Amistad and the Tortuguero national park, which is very well known to tourists.
