The Ensenada Lodge
National wildlife sanctuary in Costa Rica
for ornithologists and nature lovers
Ensenada Lodge & Wildlife Refuge is a great place to experience nature, relax and explore. The lodge is surrounded by beautiful gardens with tropical plants and flowers, numerous birds come to visit - you won't believe that you are only 2 hours away from San José.
A fantastic view over the Gulf of Nicoya, over mangrove forests and salt pans is available from the terrace of the bungalows. The great gardens with many paths through forest and mangroves will ensure that you will love “la Ensenada”.
The farm has its own land of 320 hectares and is family owned. Cattle breeding, horses and salt mining are the classic activities on the farm. La Ensenada has started a 3-point reforestation program.
- Return to the lodge's natural, forested surroundings, destroyed by years of cattle ranching.
- Planting local species
- Planting exotic woods
Today more than 30% of the farm is covered by forest, which has created a refuge for many species. Since 1977, the Tretti family has been responsible for reforestation and the creation of the nature reserve, including the mangrove forests at the mouth of the Abangares in the Gulf of Nicoya.
It is a particularly important protection zone because the last primary and secondary forests in the region are located here.
The farm offers horseback riding, tractor tours, mangrove and bird watching tours. Please contact us using the contact form.
