The best in Costa Rica - including insider tips
On our pages we show more than “highlights”!
There is so much to see in Costa Rica that we filled many pages with it.
the regions of Costa Rica
Costa Rica can be roughly divided into six regions
They should not be confused with the political provinces (there are 7 of them).
Central Valley Costa Rica
The central valley is the region around the capital San José.
The valley extends from the central mountains to the north to the "Cordillera de Talamanca" to the south of the valley. Juan Santamaria International Airport ( SJO ) is also located here.
The central Pacific coast
is the actual local recreation area for people from San José and the surrounding area.
With the commissioning (in February 2010) of the highway #27 from San José to Calderas, the nearest beaches are only 50-60 minutes away from San José.
Caribbean beaches in Costa Rica
The wild Caribbean coast
Animals and nature reserves
South Pacific region
The journey to the south is quite long and a bit boring
But then you will be rewarded. The south with the Osa Peninsula and the Corcovado National Park is one of the very special destinations in the country.
San Jose in the Central Valley
San José is the center of Costa Rica and is quite clear
Around 400,000 people live in San José - a tranquil size.
Santa Ana in the Central Valley
quiet small town in close proximity to San José
If you would like to escape the hustle and bustle of San José, you can escape west to Santa Ana.
The mountains above Escazú
Perfect area for hiking on your own!
Cerros de Escazú Nature Reserve and Santa Ana Wound Park
Recommended restaurants around San Jose
The best gastronomy can be found in the western suburbs of Escazú and Santa Ana
This is not a restaurant guide, but rather just a small, quite subjective selection of particularly popular restaurants in San José and the surrounding area.
City parks in the Central Valley of Costa Rica
There are plenty of city and leisure parks in the greater San Jose area
they are spacious and usually well maintained
a must visit: the Poás volcano
Since the exciting eruption in 2017, the Poás volcano was closed for 18 months.
You can visit the volcano again since the end of August 18
