Irazu volcano
The water in the crater of the Irazú volcano has a bright green color.
You can see this if you look down into the 3,432 m high gorge from above.
Irazú, Costa Rica's highest volcano, is not known to be an absolute threat, but is considered the most unpredictable volcano in the country. The last, quite delicate eruption was in 1993, and in 1963 Irazú erupted very violently.
The bright green color comes about because there is an acid lake in the crater. The Irazú is located in the “Parque Nacional del Volcán Irazú”, it is part of the central volcanic mountain range. From the top of the volcano, when the weather is good, you can see both seas of Costa Rica: the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean.
Irazú Volcano is just 30 km from Cartago and can be reached by daily buses that stop at the ticket booth. You pay US$15 entry, there is a small café and a souvenir shop.
Dressing warmly is recommended at this altitude - snowfall has even been reported.
