Caño Negro Nature Reserve
Animals, Animals & Animals- and Birds
The nature reserve is located in the north of Costa Rica
It extends across the border into Nicaragua and borders Lake Nicaragua. At the center of the 9,960 hectare nature reserve is the Caño Negro Lake , which is almost 800 hectares large in the rainy season and offers fantastic opportunities for animal observation.
During the dry season there are some lagoons. As soon as the Rio Frio begins to flow again, the lake fills up via several small canals.
In Nicaragua, the Rio Frio drains into the Rio San Juan, the border river between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, which in turn flows into the Caribbean at San Juan del Norte .
Apart from over 370 species of birds, one can spot large otters, turtles, howler monkeys, capuchins, sloths, tapirs, jaguars, sea cows (manatees), caimans and crocodiles en masse, freshwater sharks, the green iguanas and many more animals.
The mangrove-covered Río Frío runs right through the area, making it the ideal waterway for exploring the rich wildlife. From the boat you can discover many animals in the water, on the bank and in the vegetation near the bank.
The Caño Negro Nature Reserve
The best way to start the tour is from the small town of “ Caño Negro ”, which is located in the middle of the reserve. The Caño Negro nature reserve is part of many of our tours.
The Rio Frio is famous among sport anglers worldwide. A special feature is fishing for Tarpon Atlanticus , a saltwater fish that swims up here from the Caribbean. Small specimens weigh around 25 kg, but specimens weighing up to 100 kg have also been pulled out of the water. But it's strictly just sport fishing: get bitten, fight, fight, pull out, photograph, weigh, photograph, throw into the water.
