The flag was actually designed for the “United States of Central America”, in the year 1823. The flag was originated during the fight for independence and was supposed to represent the five Central American countries. After the “United States of Central America” splitted, Nicaragua kept the flag.
The five volcanos in the center of the flag are still symbols for the five States.
The headline: “República de Nicaragua- America Central”, is the only modification.
