Ciudad Colon
Small town located near Santa Ana, San José and the green mountains
Located just 8 kilometers west of Santa Ana, this friendly town with almost 14,000
Ciudad Colón is located in green surroundings at an altitude of 800-900m above sea level. Ciudad Colón, originally called Pacaca by the indigenous people, was renamed Columbus (Colón) in 1916 in honor of the discoverer of the continent. It is located in the canton of Mora, a more agriculturally oriented canton with a lot of coffee, fruit and sugar cane cultivation.
Ciudad Colón and Brasil de Mora are connected by the new highway (Pista del sol, 27), with San José to the east and Orotina and the Pacific coast to the west.
From here you have access to the nature reserve “ El Rodeo ” surrounded by coffee plantations and to the University of Peace ( Universidad de la Paz) .
The international peace university was initiated by the UN. Currently, over 250 students from all over the world are attending courses here with a focus on peace research, international and human rights and conflict resolution.
Peace Park (Parque La Paz):
Right next to the university is the “ Parque La Paz ”, a tropical complex with ponds, a picnic area and the Peace Monument, which commemorates the abolition of the military in Costa Rica in 1948. Here you pay a small entrance fee and can enjoy the day in nature. Very popular with Ticos.
