University of Peace, UN
The University for Peace has its headquarters in Costa Rica and was founded in 1980 by the United Nations
The University of UPEACE is not subject to UN regulations and is autonomous. The main mission of the University is the world peace and the security of UN ideals, with a focus on education, discussion and research of peace or aggression. Other universities from the UPEACE are to be established worldwide.
More than 250 students from over 90 countries are registered in the university and live in the buildings surrounding the University of Peace.
Oscar Arias, the former president of Costa Rica, is one of the founders of UPEACE.
"Happily, the Costa Rican mothers may consider themselves, because their children will never be soldiers."
The UPEACE is located in the nature reserve "El Rodeo" and is good to visit from Santa Ana. In addition to the campus there is a large public park, which also houses the Peace Monument. You pay a minimal entrance to the park, which has beautiful hiking trails (through a secondary cloud forest about 60 minutes of walking), gazebos, picnic areas and sanitary facilities.
