Rio San Juan, Nicaragua

Tour Rio San Juan/ Nicaragua, 4 days, 3 nights, leaving from Costa Rica

This tour connects a diversity of nature adventures and visiting’s of historic settlements, with an extraordinary route.

The Rio San Juan reaches 220 km, from Lago de Nicaragua, till the Caribbean Sea. “Lake, river, sea”, three different water types and two nature reservations, - this makes the area of the San Juan such special. Of course it is not possible, to explore the full distance in four days. The tour “Nicaragua Adventure” has the authentic Nicaragua and the life of the residents at the river area, as the goal.

San Carlos, NicaraguaDay 1:

We will start early in the morning from la Fortuna. Our destination is los Chiles, a city next to the border of Nicaragua, we’ll make a stop at the Rio Frio, where you get a snack. In los Chiles you’ll leave Costa Rica officially, you get a seal in your passport and enter into the ferry. The ferry is a crowded, small motorboat with 50 seats.

The silent boat trip at the underflow of the Rio Frio will take around one hour, we’ll pass dark green jungles and we make an obligatory stop, at the first military base of Nicaragua. The small city San Carlos (SCN) is beautiful located at the Lago Cocibolca, Nicaragua’s biggest inland lake. San Carlos is tiny, but crowded village, with very positive development at the last years.

It is enough time to enjoy a delicious lunch and make a walk around the lake pier, before you entrance the next boat. At this time it will be a speed boat, with the destination el Castillo.

In el Raudal del diablo (next to el Castillo) you’ll believe, that the time has stopped: Children in dugout canoes and handcarts in paved roads. Your accommodation is the best hotel in the whole village; you can enjoy the great view from the terrace over the rapids, with a fresh mixed cocktail. Probably, you can’t get better fresh fish, than here.

Day 2:

In the morning, the twitter of the birds produces together with the swooshing of the rapids, a nice morning melody. The goal of the day is the Reserva Biológia Indio Maíz. Impenetrable jungle with a rich diversity of climbing plants, giant bamboo and the smooth Rio San Juan, creates a unique setting. Monkeys are jumping from tree to tree; Caimans are soothing in the sun. The tour through the jungle begins.
The guide will show you the most worthwhile destinations in the reservation. This place is one of the most protected areas in whole Nicaragua, there is only a narrow path leads around the river bank. Rare animals nearby the bank can be observed; like sea cows, wild cats and the tapir.
At the afternoon you have time to, go to the stronghold of el Castillo, plus exploring the village and meting nice citizens.

Day 3:

This special day starts of course, with a boat trip. But this time, just to a close destination, the farm of your host. The farm owner will offer you horses, for exploring the dark green back country, when you are more in a relaxing mood, you can lay down in one of many hammocks of the farm. You’ll be totally free of choosing, how to enjoy your time.
The lunch will be in el Castillo. At the afternoon you can make with us, a city trip through San Carlos, where you’ll see the gorgeous sunset at the Lago.

Day 4:
