Family Tour through Costa Rica
Round trip Costa Rica with family
Travelling with the family, you'll probably have the need to put your own rhythm on a trip. Therefore, our individual tours are perfect for families. We combine the individual consultation and planning with a lot of experience, because we ourselves are constantly travelling as a family and have tried everything proposed here. These tours are for children from about 6 years old to well-suited adolescents. We will do some adjustments according to the age and preferences.
1st Day: Arrival in Costa Rica
Arrival in San Jose, Costa Rica and transfer to our Posada in Santa Ana. Depending on the age of the children, you may stay in a family room, or in 2 adjacent rooms.
Overnight at Posada Nena.
2nd Day: first contact with the land and animals
After a delicious breakfast, we'll go to the nature reserve El Rodeo. In the conservation area, which includes one of the last contiguous forests in the Central Valley, you can be lucky and see the first inhabitants of the forest. Monkeys jumping in the trees, toucans flying and screeching their way, and the cozy lazy sloths hanging in the trees. The region is best explored by horse. At a leisurely pace (the horses are suitable for children and beginners), we will go through the dense forests. You can enjoy the first trip through the Costa Rican rainforest in peace. Gourmet lunch in an idyllic atmosphere in the small lodge.
Overnight at Posada Nena.
3rd Day: View at one of the largest volcano craters in the world
Today we will starts early in the morning to one of the main attractions in the Central Valley. The Poás Volcano is 2,704 meters high, and has one of the largest volcanic craters in the world. The walk to the volcano crater is not particularly difficult. When the visibility is good, you can take a look at the huge crater, which contains a bright blue lake. It will be exciting when the Poás Volcano spews sulphurous mud, and steaming water into the air. From the main crater, we take a hike though a bizarre crippled forest, caused by the acidic air and the cold, up to the secondary craters with the Laguna Botos. Eyes open: here you may see some rare bird species.
The afternoon is spent at the picturesque facility "Colinas del Poás". Here are a several number of attractions to be used: you can paddle through a lake filled with fish and ducks, with a boat, or a kayak, trouts, or take small hikes through the high cloud forest on marked trails. For the more courageous participants, there are suspension bridges in a forest adventure, the Tarzan swing and Canopy: pure adrenaline.
Overnight at Posada Nena.
4th Day: boating and enjoying chocolate
4th Day:On the quiet, lower reaches of the Rio Sarapiqui,we start a quiet boat ride through the wonders of the rainforest. In the afternoon there is a very special treat. A chocolate tour on a fully functioning cocoa farm. You will be admitted into the secrets of the ecological cocoa cultivation, and explore the cultivation in the rich nature, and its delicious taste.
Overnight at Posada Tirimbina.
5 + 6 Day: wildlife viewing in Tortuguero National Park
Early in the morning we continue by boat to Tortuguero National Park, which is one of the most famous national parks on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.
As a starting point for excursions into the dense rain forest, and the abundant wildlife canals, we choose a classic camp, with some advantages:
- bigger swimming pool, in order to relax during the tour pauses
- great food from the buffet
- in the camp are many internal tours and attractions, like butterfly gardens, Ranarium, Botanical Garden, excellent care of everything, and explained very carefully.
- Great and clear explanations of the guides
- The camp is located on the beach, which is not suitable for swimming, but a very special attraction: from June to October the great leatherback turtles lay their eggs directly in the sand at the beach. An exciting and unique experience for young and old.
- Some tours are included with the camp, others should be booked before. Especially the kayak trip through the quiet tributaries is a great attraction, after a boat trip through the canals after being explained about the flora and fauna of the national park
7.- 10. Day: Pure Caribbean
Now comes the relaxation at Caribbean beaches. Transfer in the afternoon, in the nearby Cahuita, and accommodation in an exclusive Posada with a swimmingpool, and an excellent restaurant near the beach. The maritime Cahuita National Park, on the doorstep, offers a colorful world of intact corals, and wonderfully colored fish. The resort offers relaxation, and wil give you a Caribbean feeling. In addition, there are many other natural attractions and tour options, such as rainforest tours, a visit to the Bribri Indians, biking, and horseback riding.
10th Day: Caribbean Central Valley
Transfer in the afternoon from Cahuita to Santa Ana. Opportunity to do the laundry, and to deposit any luggage. In the evening, a typical “tico”-dinner with folklore show, and a spectacular view over San Jose.
11. Day: Start of 2nd Section of Family Travel
It continues towards the northwest to about 110 hectares of a large eco-resort "Lands in love". This stop in the "animal friendly zone" in the cloud forest is worth it. Over 20 km of easier and harder hiking through nature and colorful landscapes, with over 1000 species of orchids, and solitary waterfalls, lakes and giant ancient forest..
But there is also a lot of action at the “little exciting” or the “very extreme” in the offered Superman Canopy. There's something for everyone: Canopy, adventure cables, canyoning, white water rafting (class 2 - 5), and rides through the wild nature.
11.- 14. Day: around the Arenal Volcano
Today, it is a short distance further to la Fortuna de San Carlos, and the famous Arenal Volcano. A very special spectacle. The Arenal Volcano is still regarded as the most active volcano in Central America, although it has recently remained quiet around it. The hotel is located in a strategic position with spectacular views of the active side of the volcano, and the Lake of the Arenal. From the warm Jacuzzi, or from the wet bar in the swimmingpool, you can have an amazing view of the volcano. Numerous bird species can be observed at close from this position.
On the tour options, the are offers a lot around the hotel and the Volcano. Volcano hiking in the nearby National Park, hanging bridges over deep gorges and high peaks; ideal to observe the wonders of the cloud forest from above. Canopy, ATV, horseback riding, boating on Lake Arenal... everything your heart desires, will be offered in here.
From 15th Day on
The rest of the days are meant for relaxation at one of the many beaches of the Pacific coast. Now comes the sand castle, at a tropical surf beach.
We recommend a visit to Samara, one of the most beautiful beaches in Guanacaste. The sheltered location is perfect, so that everyone can learn how to surf and wave riding. Parents can join in with a body board, or with a cocktail in their hands at one of the numerous beach restaurants.
And of course there are many more activities for the whole family: you can go out with the fishermen, and do really deep sea fishing.
A special attraction on the Nicoya Peninsula is a flight in an ultra light-Autogyro helicopter. It's great for kids and the whole family.
