City Parks in the Central Valley of Costa Rica
In San José, there are plenty of large-scale and mostly well-kept city parks
As well, there are some amusement parks to relax in the countryside.
Here is a selection of particularly appreciated, partly private institutions.
Zoo Simon Bolivar
The zoological garden of San Jose was named after the Venezuelan liberation hero, Simon Bolivar. The zoo is located in the eastern part of the city.
You pay a small entry of about $ 4 per person, and something less for children. The many monkeys (also non-native species) that live in a type of outdoor enclosures are remarkable. You may also see some felines in unfortunately small cages. Due to a new law of animal protection, soon end of 2013 or beginning of 2014 this park will close as a zoological garden and will ebcome a biological garden.
Open daily from 8.00 to 16.00.
A nice trip in the Central Valley of Costa Rica, is to the biggest animal park, the Zoo Ave in las Garitas. The Spanish word "Ave" means "bird" and identifies the main attraction of the park: there are very rare birds.
Furthermore you may also see numerous mammals and reptiles that belong to the fauna of Costa Rica. Among them are huge iguanas and the rare ocelot, a wild cat.
The commitment from the zoo includes the raising of orphaned animals and the conservation of endangered species.
The city park "La Savannah" (on tico: Parque La Sabana) offers plenty of space for recreation, for a picnic and for playing sports. There are two small lakes, you can rent horses, ride bikes and scooters, there are tennis courts, a skating rink, and plenty of sports facilities. On weekends, the park is very well attended and has a lot of hawkers. A great variety of fruit and snacks; during the week it is quieter. Open every day without opening times, no entrance fees, no costs for the use of sports facilities. West from the center of the city, La Sabana.
Hacienda El Rodeo
Located in the countryside, near the town of Ciudad Colón you will find this weekend Park. A typical restaurant, a pool, and a hacienda with horses and ponies, which are available for rent.
INBioparque in Santo Domingo de Heredia
In Santo Domingo de Heredia is this impressive private city park. Many nature trails and paths lead a small space through various forms of vegetation, as it can be found in Costa Rica. Dry forest and rainforest coexist together in a small space at a big lagoon, there are many local species: caimans, turtles, waterfowl and more.
Many other attractions for children, like a labyrinth, aquarium, zoo, restaurants, Mariposarium, Ranarium, and a garden with medicinal herbs.
